75th Anniversary Celebrations

Be at the 75th Anniversary Celebrations Saturday and
Sunday 17th and 18th November

As you are all aware, this is our 75th year. The club was founded in 1932 and was originally called Scotts Beach and became Dixon Park in its second year. For the first two seasons the club had no premises, instead a hole about 2.5m across was dug at the base of The Cliff which served as a meeting place and a temporary place to store gear. From these simple beginnings we have continuously patrolled our beach and provided the public with a safe place to swim. Come along and find out more as members from the past mingle with our current members on our Anniversary weekend celebration – November 17th and 18th.

What’s in store for the anniversary weekend:

•    Saturday 17 November 5:30 for 6:00pm “75th Anniversary Muster of Members” - we will be kicking off the celebrations with a gathering of past and present members at the club. The night includes finger food provided by Greg Hopper and each member will receive a 75th Anniversary Commemorative Booklet. Tickets cost $30:00 and places are strictly limited so if you want to attend, fill in the RSVP attached and return it promptly with your payment. The function will be hosted by Mike Rabbitt who will interview a few of our past members, including (we hope) our original Club Captain Jack Owen.
There will be a display of memorabilia and old photos which is being organised by Ken Screen. If anyone has some items, newspaper clippings or photos of interest could they please contact Ken.  Any photos and newspaper clippings provided can very easily be copied and returned to you promptly. Ken’s contact – (h) 49295191, (m) 0413 521 850.

•    Sunday 18th family day to be held at the beach commencing 9:00am. Nippers will be in full swing - there will be a B.B.Q happening, coffee, Ice creams etc. The bar will open at around lunchtime and continue through the afternoon with live music to add to the occasion.

•    Merchandise available for purchase:
   - 75th anniversary Polo shirts – mens and womens sizes $35:00 each
   - 75th anniversary stubbie holders which show the 3 clubs on the holder - $5.00 each

NOTE: 75th Anniversary Member Muster RSVP and Polo Shirt Order are at the end of the newsletter.

Membership Renewal and Membership Fees

A reminder that membership fees are now overdue. Please note the membership fees are $45.00 per senior, associate member and for Juniors. Our last increase was in 2002. Just a note, to point out that our fees are by still the cheapest in the branch with some clubs fees being 2 or 3 times ours. If you missed the AGM then you may post your membership form you received in the last newsletter together with your cheque to PO Box 24 Merewether 2291.If you know of any Club member who has not received their membership renewal form for some reason – (change of address) then let Tim Smith know. It is important that you get your membership form in and your fees paid so you are covered by insurance whilst at the club. Another point worth noting is that your membership fees are supposed to be paid before the commencement of the A.G.M. in each year, and if they are not paid by the 1st Oct. then privileges and membership of the Club could be withdrawn. (By-Law 54 Const.). So come on.

The courses to be run include Senior 1st Aid, A.R.C., patrol captains, Silver and Gold Medallion, etc Check the Branch`s website (above) if you are interested.
Fundraiser - Ducks for Dollars
This very successful and fun fundraiser has kicked off again, and culminates in the great Duck Races on Newcastle harbour on Australia Day 26th January 2006 There will be two races- the 1st being for individuals - $5 ducks, and the 2nd for $110 Corporate Ducks with great prizes on offer. Duck “adoption forms” will be sent to all FINANCIAL members next newsletter, this $5 ticket was included as part of your membership levee. Other tickets will be available as usual. Our club did very well last year, winning the Corporate Duck prize and one of the individual prizes

Club Competition
The Club handicap Sunday morning swim has started again on Sundays commencing at 10.00am. We will also be running handicap board and beach events. Like last year great prizes are on offer for each of the disciplines and as in previous years the prizes will go to the competitors who turn up and have a go most consistently, so be there - you’ve got to be in It to win It.

Boats
The boats are again going very well this year with early results looking good. The mens “A” crew will be representing the Branch at the Interbranch Titles at Umina, and are currently in the running for State representation. In the Peters series last weekend we had 5 of our 6 crews in finals. A good day for Dicko, well done all.
“Ringers II”, the club’s new surf boat was launched Sunday 28 October. This surfboat was manufactured by Slipstream to a radical new design and is the first one to be made. The boat will be used in the Ocean Thunder series over the following dates: Nov 3, Dec 16, Jan 19 and Feb 16 all at Dee Why. Inclusion in the Ocean Thunder series is a feather in the cap of the boaties as it is an invitation only series and Dixon Park are the first Hunter Branch club to be invited. We hope the new boat will prove to be a successful secret weapon and we wish the crew all the best.

Bar Staff
This is just a general call going out to members who may be interested in working behind the bar at the club, when Club functions are on or when functions are being held in the Club by outside groups. Interested people should hold a Responsible Service of Alcohol Certificate. If you don’t hold a RSA cert. and enough people are interested, we can organise to run a course at the Club, as we have done on previous occasions. Volunteers are also needed to assist run Coldies on Sundays. Interested people should contact Licensee Lewis Roussos 0411 071 119

This is a new event for Newcastle, this being the second time that it has been run,and it is being organised by the guy who runs the Sparke Helmore Tri. We have been asked to provide water safety and some marshals for the bike and run legs. All up 2 IRBs, 12 skis and/or boards and about 12 land crew. Try and keep this date clear. People interested in helping should contact me-marshalls, or Al Stace-boards and skis, or Richard McWhinney IRBs. The event will be run Sunday morning and should finish about 10.30 am. The water safety will be needed from about 6.30 until 8.30 and the land crew from 8.oo until 10.30. Please help us out.
