75th Anniversary Celebrations

As you are all aware, this is our 75th year. The club was founded in 1932 and was originally called Scotts Beach and became Dixon Park in its second year. For the first two seasons the club had no premises, instead a hole about 2.5m across was dug at the base of The Cliff which served as a meeting place and a temporary place to store gear. From these simple beginnings we have continuously patrolled our beach and provided the public with a safe place to swim. Come along and find out more as members from the past mingle with our current members on our Anniversary weekend celebration – November 17th and 18th. Planning for the weekend is well underway and we will be kicking off the Celebrations with a gathering of past and present members at the club, 5.30 for 6.00pm on Saturday 17th. This function will be MC’d by Mike Rabbitt who will interview a few of our past members, including (we hope) our original Club Captain Jack Owen. There will be a display of memorabilia and old photos which is being organised by Ken Screen. If anyone has some items, newspaper clippings or photos of interest could they please contact Ken. Any photos and newspaper clippings provided can very easily be copied and returned to you promptly. Kens contact – (h) 49295191, (m) 0413 521 850.

Sunday 18th we will have a family day at the beach commencing 9.30am. Nippers will be in full swing - there will be a B.B.Q happening, Coffee, Ice creams etc. The bar will open at around lunchtime and continue through the afternoon.

Patrol Rosters
The 2007-08 Season and Patrols commence on Saturday 29th September and
Attached is draft 1 of the Patrol Roster. To read the roster Column 1 & 2 are the patrol members. Column 3 (date) are the dates for the patrol. Column 4 (time) indicates if it is a morning patrol. Column 6 (who) indicates who is required for each patrol, if all is shown then a full patrol is required, on the other dates (Saturdays & Public holidays) it is up to the patrol captain to elect which patrol member is required. There will be an award for Saturday Patrols.
I have tried to group new members on patrols with other members to whom they have had some connection. If anyone wants a change of patrol to be with friends etc it is not a problem just give me (Dean Rowe) a call on (0422 665 988) and I can rearrange to suit.
All members are to attend patrols on their rostered dates, if unable to attend then it is your responsibility to get a substitute. All competing members must have completed 24 hours (masters 12 hours) of patrols in a calendar year in order to compete at State. This year patrol hours are sent to state via the Internet so they will have instant access to each member’s hours.
Please Note patrolling members: Patrol 11 needs a patrol Captain. Please contact Dean Rowe if you can help with this.

Membership Renewal and Membership Fees
A reminder that membership fees are due. Please note the membership fees are $45.00 for all members. Just a note to point out that our fees are still (despite the increase) among the cheapest in the branch with some clubs fees being 2 or 3 times ours. If you missed the AGM then post the personal membership renewal form you received in the last newsletter together with your cheque and the other forms requiring your signature to PO Box 24 Merewether 2291 or bring them to our membership registration days, which will be held on Sunday afternoons the 16th Sept and 23rd Sept commencing at 4.00pm. If you know of any Club member who has not received their membership renewal form for some reason – (change of address etc) then let Tim Smith know (ph: 4944 8203, mob: 0428 435 213).
It is important that you get your membership form in and your fees paid so you are covered by insurance whilst at the club.

Proficiency Dates
Tentative dates for Proficiency testing have been set, so many of us had better start doing some training. The tests will be run on a similar format to last year. In a nutshell there will be a number  of opportunities (9) to get your test done at Cooks Hill, Merewether or Dixon Park when the time and conditions suit you. Surf Life Saving Courses
The Branch is gearing up to run another series of courses for members of surf clubs. These courses will leave candidates better qualified and accredited to perform beach and pool lifeguard positions, and be better accredited for workplace conditions. The courses to be run include Senior 1st Aid, Level 1 Surf Officials, Level 1 Coaching. Check the Branch`s website. By the way, there have been a few of our club members doing this sort of work for branch for a few years now – helping with school groups teaching water safety etc.

DHL Uniforms
Those patrolling members who still require DHL uniforms should let their Patrol captain or Dean Rowe know ASAP. Everyone on Patrol should wear your correct uniform including your cap.

Quad Drivers
Dean also needs to know the names of those drivers that need to renew their proficiency and also those who want to become qualified to drive the Councils Quad. There will be a qualifying day  being organised by NCC. Interested members will be notified when the date is set.

Boaties.
The Dixon Park Boaties have hit the ground running again this season, and again we have 6 crews in training under the guidance of Trevor Dyson and Perry Sparkes. Our Ä” crew  are looking forward to competing in the Ocean Thunder surfboat series and we wish them good luck and hope their enthusiasm and experience reap their just rewards. See Boat Captain Matt Criss’s  report :

“Some of the boaties have been on the water for a few months already in preparation for the season ahead. We welcome Trevor, Perry and the majority of the boaties from last season back for another summer. Pleasingly, there are a few new rowers and members in the mix. In particular, we would like to welcome Mark Sharman, who has just joined the club and will sweep a couple of crews. We currently look like fielding six crews, headed up by the Veterans, Open Men and U23 Men all returning from last season. Some of the new crews are only just forming up, so if there is anyone interested in representing the club in surf boats, please contact the boat captain Matthew Criss on 0409 099 206.

A hearty thanks to Seamus Speers and the folks from York Linings International for coming on board as a major sponsor. York Linings will be our naming rights sponsor for the boaties in this season’s televised Ocean Thunder series. We would also like to thank Xerox for their loyal, ongoing support. Word has it that recent trials of a new surf boat went well. If all proceeds to plan, we should have a new boat from Gavin Clark at Slipstream Surf in the shed by the end of October.”

IRB`S
Not to be outdone the IRBs have also been very busy in training through the winter and we have just had about 10 members successfully complete their crewman’s certificate, with about half of these now going on to do the IRB drivers licence. Well done to the IRB team lead by Richard McWhinney. Anyone interested in IRB awards should contact Richard 0411 884 774
